School Spotlights: Inside Online RN to BSN Programs in Utah

Utah’s online RN to BSN offerings are known for their speed and flexibility. If you’re working right now as an RN, you can enroll either part-time or full-time with asynchronous coursework designed to fit around your schedule.

It is important to know, however, that accreditors require all RN to BSN programs to include some form of practicum or capstone project. These usually take place at either your workplace or another healthcare facility in your area, but are often the only in-person requirement for the degree.

The three programs below give you a good idea of what kind of pacing you can expect and the admissions criteria you’ll need to meet to enroll.

University of Utah

The University of Utah’s online RN to BSN program is a 30-credit, fully asynchronous track designed to build skills in health promotion and healthcare leadership. When enrolling, you’ll choose a two, three, or four semester plan of study depending on how quickly you want to finish. Courses run consecutively through fall, spring, and summer.

As part of the university’s affiliation with the University of Utah Health, students also gain access to the state’s only academic medical center for clinical and leadership experience. Though the GPA requirement is a bit higher than other programs, alternate pathways exist for RNs with at least two years of professional experience.

Duration: Two, three, or four semesters

Mode: Online and fully asynchronous

Cost: $12,000 flat rate regardless of timeline

Admissions Requirements:

  • Completed online application
  • ADN or diploma in nursing from an accredited program
  • Current, unencumbered RN license (or NCLEX completion within two months of starting)
  • Minimum 2.7 prerequisite GPA and minimum 3.0 GPA for all nursing coursework
  • Official transcripts for all post-secondary coursework

Utah State University

Another public offering, Utah State University’s RN to BSN program is also available entirely online. The curriculum is centered on advanced health assessment, nursing informatics, and population health. This program is also designed around the two, three, or four semester structure, which students choose when they enroll.

USU’s program is designed to build on associate-degree coursework rather than repeating foundational material, so students are expected to have a strong level of nursing competency from the start.

Admission to the program is a bit demanding, but it’s a good fit for RNs who want individualized attention and a galvanizing education to prepare them for the real world of BSN nursing.

Courses are delivered online and asynchronously in short six-week blocks, and the full curriculum consists of just 25 credits. Most students are able to complete the program in two to three semesters.

Practicum hours are arranged by the university at a clinical site near you.
