Inside 3 Online MSN Programs in North Carolina
Hybrid and online MSN programs are common in North Carolina, but each program is different. Some programs, like the one at the University North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG), offer fully asynchronous online classes that you complete on your own schedule.
However, asynchronous classes can be the exception, not the rule. Many online programs have set class times, requiring you to view a lecture or discussion at a certain time.
While there are some high-quality, 100% online MSN programs in North Carolina, more programs are offered on a hybrid basis.
Features of hybrid programs:
- Mixed format: made up of both online and in-person components
- Mostly online: some are almost fully online, with only a couple of visits to campus, such as that of Duke University
- Partially online: many provide an equal blend of in-person and online classes, such as UNC Chapel Hill‘s MSN program

Types of MSN Programs in North Carolina
There is more than one kind of MSN program in North Carolina, and each one is tailored toward students in different situations. Take a look at the different variations below to determine which one would work best for you. We’ve even included two examples of schools in North Carolina offering each type of program to make your search easier.
Traditional MSN
A traditional MSN program is ideal for students who already have a bachelor’s degree in nursing, have some nursing experience, and want to advance their careers. Usually, these programs are offered in person or in a hybrid format.
Direct-Entry MSN
Students who have a bachelor’s degree in another area and are looking to enter the nursing field should consider direct-entry MSN programs. It’s important to note that these programs are more difficult to find and often take longer to complete.
Accelerated MSN
If you want to complete your MSN in as little time as possible (and potentially save money doing so), consider accelerated MSN programs. These programs set up the curriculum so students can complete their degrees quickly.
RN to MSN Bridge
Let’s say you have your RN license, but you don’t have a BSN. RN to MSN programs are ideal as they are designed for registered nurses with associate degrees in nursing.
Dual Master’s
If you want to deepen your nursing expertise while also expanding your knowledge in a complementary field, consider a dual master’s program. These programs award you an MSN and a non-nursing graduate degree, often a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Base Methodology for EduMed’s “Best Online Graduate Rankings” for the ‘25-’26 school year.
One: Create a list of eligible schools & programs
To be eligible for ranking, schools were required to meet the following criteria based on data pulled from The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), which was self-reported by the schools themselves:
- Institutional accreditation from an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
- At least one online component in a program within the ranking-subject area.
- The existence of academic and career counseling on campus and/or online.
Two: Assign weightings to eligible schools & programs
After creating the list of eligible schools, EduMed data scientists assigned weights and ranked schools based on a mix of metrics, which were all self-reported by the school themselves to the U.S. Department of Education and IPEDS.
The metrics are listed below in order of most- to least-heavily weighted*.
- Tuition – Average in-state tuition for graduate students studying full-time.
- Online Programs – Number of online programs, either partially- or fully-online, in the relevant subject area.
- Online Enrollment – Percent of graduate students taking at least one distance education class.
- Graduation Rate – Percent of full-time, first-time students receiving an award in 6 years.
- Student/Faculty Ratio – The number of students per faculty member.
*Metrics #2-3 and #4-5 were equally weighted.
