Types of Online NP Programs in New York

There are several different paths to becoming an NP, including earning a master’s degree, doctorate, or a specialty certificate. Students in New York also have program options that include online learning, which range from completely virtual offerings to hybrid programs that include on-site classes or clinical work.

The following is an overview of the types of online NP programs available at schools in New York.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

The most common and popular NP option is the Master of Science in Nursing program. Nurse practitioner MSN programs typically require a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a current registered nurse (RN) license for admission. You may also need some experience as a working RN in a clinical setting.

Both full-time and part-time online or hybrid options are available in New York, and completion times vary from 18 months to around three years.

Utica University

  • Duration: 8 Semesters (Two to three years)
  • Mode: Online
  • Cost: $850 per credit hour

Post-Master’s Certificate

This option is available to RNs who already hold an MSN. Post-master’s NP certificate programs offer nursing professionals a quick and affordable path to work in their chosen specialty. That includes current NPs in one specialization looking to transition or expand their practice into another area.

Online and hybrid formats are common, but students in the NP certificate program must complete on-site clinical hours for their chosen specialization. While program lengths vary by type, most students can earn certificates in about one year.

Manhattanville University

  • Duration: 18 months
  • Mode: Online
  • $925 per credit hour

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

A DNP is an advanced degree that allows nursing professionals to acquire greater skills and expertise. It is a practice- and leadership-focused doctorate, rather than the more academic and research-focused nursing PhD.

Many schools offer both BSN-to-DNP and MSN-to-DNP options with two or more specializations. Completion dates vary widely from three to seven years, depending on specializations and choice of full-time or part-time study. While there are online DNP programs available, substantial clinical practice hours are required for licensure.

State University of New York Polytechnic Institute

  • Duration: Four years
  • Mode: Hybrid
  • Cost: $471 per credit hour (residency dependent)

FAQs from New York Online NP Students

What are some common admission requirements for an NP degree in New York?

The most likely requirements are a BSN, a current RN license in New York, transcripts showing a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and a completed online application.

You may also need to acquire letters of recommendation, participate in an interview with program leaders, and provide a personal essay. Some admissions have additional requirements, such as a background check, proof of passing a statistics course, and a Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.

Why is it important for my online NP program to be accredited?

Accreditation is your way of assuring that your online NP program provides you with the education and training required to work legally in NYS.

Certification will provide opportunities to be hired by a healthcare facility and to start on the path to success in your professional practice.

Programmatic accreditation is handled primarily by two professional associations for nursing schools: the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

What type of specialties are available in an online NP program?

NP students in New York have a variety of specialties to choose from. The four most popular are these:

You’ll find online NP programs in New York for other specialties as well, including acute care nursing and primary (non-urgent) care. Any specialty you choose must be confirmed through its own certification process.

Is financial aid available for NP programs in New York?

The short answer is “yes,” but it’s important to note that there are several financial aid options for NP students that you may qualify for. Before you apply for your program, it is important to understand your funding options.

Scholarships and grants are ideal funding sources, as they most commonly don’t need to be paid back. Your chosen school may also offer scholarship and grant opportunities through federal and state government programs. Loans or employer tuition reimbursement are other sources that help defray costs.

How do I find a clinical placement during my studies for an NP degree or certificate?

There are different pathways to find your clinical and fieldwork experience. The best way to get started is by contacting your program director early in the process to coordinate a schedule. If you are presently working in a clinical job, there may be opportunities to do the work you need to earn your NP, which can be found by contacting the human resources department.

Licensing and Certification for New York Nurse Practitioners

The process for certifying and licensing nurse practitioners in New York is straightforward but involves several steps. It begins with a certification test administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the National Certification Corporation (NCC), or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Test costs are between $240 and $315 for the AANP, $210 and $325 for the NCC, and $290 and $395 for the ANCC. Memberships for each group usually lead to the lowest price.

Although national certification is required for licensure, it is not explicitly required for a nurse who graduates from a registered NY program. These exceptions may be made by the NYSED on the case by case basis.

As for state licensure, it takes place through the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Requirements include an RN license in the state, proof of graduation from an accredited NP program, and the $85 licensing fee. This can all be completed online.

License renewal in New York is required every three years. It costs $35 to re-register. Professionals are required to complete 75 hours of continuing education in that three-year span, including an infection control class, a course on treating substance abuse patients, and another course on child abuse reporting and identification.
