Online Post-Master’s Certificate Options
If you’re considering an online post-master’s NP certificate, you already know there are multiple clinical pathways from which to choose. From emergency care to psychiatric mental health, there’s a specialization area that can mirror your academic and clinical goals. Read on to review some of the potential certificate options that can increase your job prospects as an NP.
Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP
An adult-gerontology primary care specialization focuses on the medical needs of an aging population, primarily older adults and elderly patients. These programs dive into elements specific to this practice area, including the management of chronic conditions, disease prevention, and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle.
Emergency NP
For those who thrive in higher-pressure situations that often involve medical emergencies, an emergency NP certificate is a solid choice. These programs teach nurses to perform in stressful medical situations while covering vital topics like patient assessment, advanced pharmacology, and emergency/trauma care across the lifespan.
Family NP
Like other nurse practitioner programs, a family NP specialization offers a blend of online coursework and clinical requirements. Concentration courses include topics such as primary care of the emerging family, pharmacology for family nurse practitioners, and advanced clinical assessment and diagnostic reasoning. Before earning their certificates, students must complete a practicum at an approved clinical site.
Neonatal NP
Specializing in providing competent care for infants and newborns, standout online neonatal programs hone in on the unique healthcare needs of this group. In a neonatal NP certificate program, students tackle classes such as diagnostic reasoning and clinical decision-making for the neonatal NP, pathophysiology of human disease, and advanced pharmacotherapeutics for neonatal nurse practitioners.
Pediatric NP
Focusing on the medical needs of patients from infancy to adolescence, pediatric NP certificate programs cover everything from informing parents/guardians about the development process to treating common childhood illnesses. Typical courses for pediatric NP students include professional issues for pediatric NPs, pharmacology for the pediatric nurse practitioner, and advanced pathophysiology.
Psychiatric Mental Health NP
In addition to treating physical ailments, health professionals can secure an NP certificate in psychiatric mental health. This pathway focuses on everything from mental health interventions to medication management. Standard classes include psychopharmacology across the lifespan, theoretical foundations for advanced mental health NPs, and advanced clinical assessment.
Women’s Health
Focusing on the healthcare needs of women, a women’s health NP certificate offers specialized training in areas like reproductive health and gynecological care. Courses vary between schools, but common ones include primary care for women’s health, gynecological care through the lifespan, and advanced diagnostic reasoning.
Expert Insight
If you’re currently working as an RN, choosing your current specialty as your NP concentration can help you land your first NP job. For example, I’ve known critical care nurses who returned to school to become NPs specializing in acute/critical care. Because they already knew the critical care team at their job, they were promoted on their unit as a nurse practitioner once they graduated.

Inquire if these courses are transferrable. But if it’s been a while since you graduated, you may need to repeat these courses.
What is the shortest post master’s nurse practitioner certificate program?
