How to Choose an LPN-to-RN Bridge Program in California: Insights from Working Nurses
California’s LPN-to-RN bridge programs operate within a complex licensing landscape, and the programs in this guide are all properly aligned with state requirements. What they can’t tell you is which program works within your specific situation: your location in California, your current employer, and whether you’ll complete the program part-time or full-time. Our nurses share what to consider.
Apply to Multiple Programs Simultaneously
Many of California’s community college LVN-to-RN programs run waitlists, leaving some applicants waiting a year or more for a seat. If you’re serious about pursuing this path, consider applying to multiple programs simultaneously rather than waiting to hear back from your first choice. If you’re accepted, great! If not, you aren’t wasting time waiting when you could be starting a program somewhere else.
Your LVN Experience Is Valuable
As an LVN bridging into RN, you have a good understanding of how the nursing team functions and what tasks can and can’t be delegated, which is an advantage. That experience can help you become a stronger leader.
Inside Online LVN to RN Programs in California
Online LVN to RN programs can offer valuable flexibility, but they’re not fully online. While many schools incorporate distance learning elements (such as live or recorded lectures, assignments, readings, and exams) you should expect to complete key components in person.
Here’s what most programs typically require:
- Online coursework – Core nursing theory classes are often delivered through virtual platforms, allowing you to study on your schedule.
- On-campus labs – Hands-on skills training must be completed in person to build clinical competency.
- In-person class sessions – Some programs include occasional campus visits for instruction, simulations, or testing.
- Clinical experiences – You’ll complete supervised clinical hours at approved healthcare facilities, usually located near where you live.
To help jumpstart your search, we’ve highlighted three online LVN to RN programs in California below. As you explore your options, be prepared to look closely at each program’s format to understand how much can truly be completed online.

- Institutional accreditation from an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
- At least one online component in a program within the ranking-subject area.
- The existence of academic and career counseling on campus and/or online.
Two: Assign weightings to eligible schools & programs
After creating the list of eligible schools, EduMed data scientists assigned weights and ranked schools based on a mix of metrics, which were all self-reported by the school themselves to the U.S. Department of Education and IPEDS.
The metrics are listed below in order of most- to least-heavily weighted*.
- Online Programs – Number of online programs, either partially- or fully-online, in the relevant subject area.
- Tuition – Average in-state tuition for undergraduate students studying full-time.
- Avg. Aid Amount – Average amount of institutional grant aid awarded to full-time, first-time undergraduates.
- Students w/ Aid – Percent of full-time, first-time students undergraduates awarded institutional aid.
- Online Enrollment – Percent of undergraduate students taking at least one distance education class.
- Student/Faculty Ratio – The number of students per faculty member.
- Graduation Rate – Percent of full-time, first-time receiving an award in 6 years.
