In Detail: Online LPN to RN Programs in West Virginia
Many LPN to RN programs are in-person programs, though some offer virtual didactic (lecture) courses. All programs still require in-person labs and clinicals, so none are truly fully online.
Features of online LPN to RN programs in West Virginia:
- Flexibility: offer a range of class times (evenings and weekends included); built for working LPNs who want to transition to RN practice
- Hybrid formats: incorporates a mix of online and in-person coursework, on-campus labs and simulations, and in-person clinical rotations at healthcare sites
- Result in a degree: award graduates an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN); provide ways for students to transition into Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs
When choosing a program, LPNs should look at the course schedule and make sure it meets their flexibility needs. They should also consider the length of the program, what prerequisites are required, and if credit is given for prior experience and licensure.
The three programs below show different ways these elements can be combined to create a successful avenue for LPNs to earn their RN licenses.
Accelerated LPN to RN, ASN – Bluefield State University
Bluefield State University’s Accelerated LPN to RN ASN program begins with a 10-week summer transition course and progresses into the third semester of the ASN program. FAQs About LPN to RN Online Programs in West Virginia

Some of those are answered below, including ones about expectations in terms of course content, program length, and prerequisite requirements. You’ll also get an idea of how programs are usually delivered.
What can I expect from LPN to RN programs in West Virginia?
LPN to RN programs in WV provide the additional skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to become an RN through various avenues, including:
- General education courses
- Nursing classes
- Labs and simulations
- Clinical training
Hands-on experiences teach practical skills through supervised patient care in diverse healthcare settings. This direct application of theory allows students to refine their clinical decision-making, communication, and critical thinking abilities.
Also, there are two types of bridge programs available for LPN students: an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). So, coursework and program length depend on the degree path.
What are common core courses found in LPN to RN programs in West Virginia?
Course specifics vary from program to program, but the fundamentals are the same. Every program has an LPN to RN transition course teaching the basic skills, attitudes, and knowledge RNs need in a patient care setting. These might include:
- LPN to RN transition course
- Nursing theory and concepts
- Pharmacology
- Specialty nursing subjects (i.e., adult care, pediatrics, or mental health)
What prerequisites do LPN to RN programs require, and are they always a requirement?
LPN to RN programs always require prerequisites, but some do not require you to complete all of them before starting the program—some can be completed during the early part of your program. Generally, though, most LPN to RN programs require the following prerequisite courses prior to program admission:
- Anatomy

- Microbiology
- Basic Biology
Additionally, some programs require specific coursework in areas like English and psychology. Carefully review prerequisite requirements, usually detailed within admission information, before applying to a program.
Expert Insight
Most science-related prerequisites will always be required before entering an LPN to RN program because they are fundamental to nursing. For example, you need to understand the basics of microbiology (i.e., how bacteria grows) before you can devise a care plan for a patient with a bacterial infection.
What do I need to know about online vs. hybrid vs. on-campus delivery options?
First you should know that for all program options, clinical experiences always take place at various healthcare facilities where you provide direct patient care under the guidance of experienced instructors. That said, you should know the primary differences between the three program types:
- Online LPN to RN programs provide the utmost flexibility, allowing you to complete most of your coursework remotely. Lectures, assignments, and discussions take place online, enabling you to study at your own pace from home.
- Hybrid programs offer a balanced blend of online and in-person instruction, providing flexibility and convenience if you have a busy schedule.
- On-campus LPN to RN programs offer a classroom-based learning environment where you attend lectures and participate in hands-on lab sessions on campus.
How long does an LPN to RN program in West Virginia take to complete?
The duration of LPN-RN programs varies, but most in West Virginia take one to two years to complete. Some schools offer accelerated options, allowing you to become an RN in a shorter time frame.

- Institutional accreditation from an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
- At least one online component in a program within the ranking-subject area.
- The existence of academic and career counseling on campus and/or online.
Two: Assign weightings to eligible schools & programs

The metrics are listed below in order of most- to least-heavily weighted*.
- Online Programs – Number of online programs, either partially- or fully-online, in the relevant subject area.
- Tuition – Average in-state tuition for undergraduate students studying full-time.
- Avg. Aid Amount – Average amount of institutional grant aid awarded to full-time, first-time undergraduates.
- Students w/ Aid – Percent of full-time, first-time students undergraduates awarded institutional aid.
- Online Enrollment – Percent of undergraduate students taking at least one distance education class.
- Student/Faculty Ratio – The number of students per faculty member.
- Graduation Rate – Percent of full-time, first-time receiving an award in 6 years.
*Metrics #1-2 and #3-5 were equally weighted.
